A low hours pair of Western Electric 437A tubes, both feature deep black plates and top, round halo getters. Very close production -- unit #1 from April, 1977 and #2 from November, 1976. Pins are staright and letters are very nice and legible.
These are low hours, used tubes -- the appearance of each is quite beautiful looking -- outstanding for display and preamp building experiments. The flashing is striking and shiny, they have no dark burn areas -- just a few splotches, that might be from manufacture, (no burns from use).
I would use these 437A's myself -- they are well vetted and I think this is an excellent, low use pair.
Guaranteed good filaments and no DOA.
Western Electric 437A's are notouriously difficult to test -- it's best to use equipment designed for them (in this case, we used the WE KS Cardmatic USM 118)
Tubes are guaranteed to arrive good, woking, NO SHORTS, NO DOA.
Because we can't control the DiY circuits these tubes see service in, No returns allowed based on subjective noise levels or relative tests using other types of Tube Testers.
Other commonly available testers like the Amplitrex AT1000 or modified 539C's sometimes can't test the 437A in a stable manner (giving unreliable results and oscillation at times) -- so for these please note: no returns based on other tester’s test results or performance -- which will naturally vary according to different circuits, preamps and testers.
The best way to evaluate the 437A is in circuit in a preamp, not with a tester.
These tubes seem to work very well, are strong, and seem very stable.
After 45 min warmup, each tube was tested on WE KS Cardmatic USM-118 at eP 160V (see photos of tests, and test voltages) -- they lit nicely -- both measured closely -- the tester indicated #1 66 and #2 68, out of full scale (which is 80 on the 437), which is approximately a bit more than 32,000 mhos, which -- if you look a the WE published data is about 80-85% (depending on bias and load impedance) (see photos of each test). The USM 118 tester indicated no shorts, no gas. I have tested many, many 437A's and these tubes are very strong and STABLE.
From the 1970s/early 80s with original WE boxes with original excelsior padding (the cardboard is worn, has some stains and creases and wear from storage, see photos)
Since these WE 437A’s are now scarce again, and quite expensive -- this is a good buy -- add to your collection as display and preamp DiY builds / experiments too. As noted by another astute owner of these -- you are not likely to ever own more superior tubes for preamplification -- these are sought after for good reason. They make wonderful high performance tubes both as gain stage, and can even be utilized for low level amplification for headphones and highly efficient speakers. These are the pinnacle of Western Electric’s tube design -- the twilight of the tube and beautiful sounding moreover.
