A rarified find for those planning to build their dream monoblock amps. Seldom seen matched pair of UTC's top- of-the-line LS power transformers. Gourgeous cast / engraved with raised UTC logos on top. Massive and over-engineered Plate & Filament, perfect for big monoblock amps, making them very desirable for amp upgrades or DiY builds…
Introduced in the early 1950's to provide power transformers to top notch, cost no object builders of big, super hifi amps still using classic, big glass triodes and pentodes. And to match applications of their top dog LS 56 (and others) series of outputs... These are older gray finish models from the early 1950s. Bakelite terminals are solid, tight and free of cracks (they are solid and near perfect; one has a slight ridge around rim( cosmetic only flaw, see photo). Very large, approx 150mm x 130mm x 130mm, each weighs in a massive 17lbs each!
Nice looking in every way I could see . Paint has a few areas of age related flaws. Original rivited tags have a little oxidation on screws, minor finish flaws from storage, normal for age. Original mounting screws included top and bottom. Papers and connection info shown in photos also included.
The LS Linear Standard LS-74 was designed as a main power transformer for the last of the giant 1950s hifi -- and the last of the big studio audio monitoring and recording / powerful record cutting amplifier applications..Primary is configured for USA standard 115V AC and the secondary supplies 415-395-0-395-415V at 275 volts and 5V at 6 amps, / 6.3 volts at 5 amps.
It's become known over the years, that the power supply section is best area to obsess over. You want to put as much quality (and weight) in your amp's power section / supply. Transformers and rectifier tubes make a huge difference here. The longevity and stability of UTC's LS series power transformers were never really matched during this era, UTC's peak of build quality standards. For your next classic amp project -- you'll have many wondeful classic USA brands to choose for tube output transformers. For power transformers -- most of UTC's competitiors (Triad & Peerless) had never really invested in the design and construction of nice, large and heavy power supply transformers of this size and voltage, making the LS-74 -- the best choice in a very limited field. Modern power transformers are not so overbuilt, and cost a fortune, and rarely supply the filament and plate voltage combination of these...
