They have never made a tool that has been anything short of the best — if flaws develop, they pull it from the market…for even the smallest problem. Festool machines last forever, and they have terrific support from the USA based division.
They have long owned the market for high-end dust collection enabled routers…I am not aware of any better routing machines produced by any tool company. Routers make allot of dust, chips and mess, so real dust collection during hand routing was a bit of a joke until Festool designed these.
Festool’s (2) smaller machines, the OF1010 and OF1400 are really, really nice. If you can only own one router in your lifetime — it should be the flagship… this OF 2200 EB. Calling it the cadillac of routers, or "the flagship" won’t do this machine justice! It’s so powerful, so smooth and so, so, controllable — it has at times been called it not just a plunge router…but a handheld wood shaper!
Many toolies, woodworkers, crafts people, boat builders and seasoned journeyman refer to this router… the OF 2200 EB as possibly the finest built, and best to own Festool in the entire lineup. That’s a broad statement. As it stands, it’s also one of the largest hand tools they have ever produced. Able to draw up to 1800 watts (it’s a MMC tool, so it only draws what it needs, and won't bog down) power through ridiculously thick hardwood. (see video below)
More amazing … it is well known that the 2 smaller routers Festool makes … don’t collect dust or chips nearly as well as the big OF 2200. The OF2200 is of radical different design compared to the smaller machines. Two center lucite rings snap down at the push of a button, encasing the work in a chamber that is under vacuum — really fancy and really cool to see in action! Even more amazing is how safe it makes this massive machine to operate — and how well it works to suck up all of the dust and chips as you cut.
All of the controls on this machine are beyond precise. the power button, the lock spindle, and the super fast ratcheting bit chuck make this giant — crazy powerful machine far easier, safer and faster than a cheaper tool from some other company.
Do some research on your needs, and watch some of the incredible tool videos on youtube, reviewing this; the king of routers… if you are a user of Festool’s … and you like smooth cuts and great dust collection — don’t let the size scare you off. The OF2200 is often compared to the smaller Festool routers — and in many ways the extra weight and heft, and especially smoothness… allows it to be more of a pleasure to work with over the cheaper, 1010 and 1400.
This OF2200 was purchased new last year at a Woodcraft. It was the last of the OF 2200 EB, which came in the old style Systainer, flip down style. The new Systainers maintain stack ability with this old design. Being the original Systainer latch, those who are heavily invested in Festool, may be very happy to get this one.
This router, was since purchase powered up only three times, 2 were short test cuts, this is where my amazement became solidified — this really is the best hand router in the world! Despite it’s size, power and weight — it’s easier to run than smaller, lighter machines.
I am truly saddened to sell it — this tool was proudly purchased to setup a new woodshop, that has not happened. The need to set up a small routing table has left me with no room for my beloved OF 2200.
