Perfectly matched pair of Jensen P12R "J" version, special order High Fidelity with high efficiency, and low resonance for use as woofer. Tests revealed the impressively natual low (Fs) resonance of each cone ... around62hz. The lows from these woofers are fast, clear well defined. Absolutely perfect for tube amps, in musical instruments (bass) or HiFi 2 or 3 way systems.
These 50 year old speakers have the original black paint, and silver ink Jensen codes (see exhibit E,F) The frames are MINT, no corrosion as is typical just a hint of dust from the the 55 years of climate controlled storage... Unit #1 has MINT cone. Unit #2, has a very slight dark puncture spot (see exhibit D), at the farthest point of the surround, a slight mark made when it was installed at the factory (defect) smaller than 1/8"-- cosmetic only -- absolutely does not affect sound.
Fully tested, see reports. Both speakers play wonderfully - and present beautifully still.
... Genuine and about 55 years old. Nice cones and original Jensen black frame paint, matching stamps labels, cones and original identification #s. This is an examined, matched & tested NICE set.
DCR also confirmed, and PERFECTLY MATCHED 6.5 - 6.7 ohm DCR coils on calibrated OHM-meter.
Impedance was tested with audio signal, found to be WELL MATCHED for both units. Sound is clean, clear, no rubs, buzzes or distortion. Spyder (dampers) are all centered, no sag (see reports exhibit C & F). The best, most throughly tested pair on eBay or anywhere else.
Very difficult to find in all ORIGINAL matched cones, and completely tested. .
Jensens of the 1950s and early 1960s are an exceptional display of American Pragmatism... over time as they found their place in killer amps and early hifi setups, helping to define an entire era of sound. Jensen's like this are not overly complicated -- rather they're perfectly built, and the designers at Jensen were still listening back then, so they sound great with low powered tube amps. Jensen speakers back then, during the 1940s through the 1960s were the dominent, premium dynamic cone speaker choice by most every quality speaker system and musicalinstrument builder -- many other good brands during this time -- Jensen delivered the goods in crisp sound, efficiency and performance.
Drivers of this era, were still designed for open back, open baffle or simple bass reflex cabinets of generous size. Their crisp, rigid cones are conrolled with strongest 12" size with hefty Alnico V or Syntox-6 ferrite, giving them amazing efficiency and detail far better than most modern drivers.
Instrument players, using Fender, Vox and Ampeg owners will that have experienced genuine vintage Jensens like this know they have killer tone, crunch and the perfect breakup characteristics nicely suited to mid size tube amps.
By the late 1950's, the cost of ALNICO alloy, heft and quality made the large Alnico P-series the top-shelf selection when sound quality and performance considerations were paramount. Even then, the Alnico based P-series eventually faded, as the Syntox ferrite sounded great too. 1950s-early 1960s Jensen was at it's APEX of quality, durability and cosistancy standards in sound.
This is a perfectly matched set of P12 "RJ". This was a special order version of the P12, designated for High Fidelity use, and featuring terrific LF response characteristics, and terrific sensitivity / efficiency for low and medium powered tube amps. The Alnico magnet and impedance ratings were the same as the 1960 era P12 -- the cones differ slightly, offering a meaty, yet still detailed low/mid bass and surprisingly reaching well into the low mids (when played crossoverless). These featured a much higher quality cone, designed for super output at very low wattages, these speakers sound amazing, filling your entire room with the power from one single ended EL84 or 6V6!
The molded cone, a straight sided type, with formed rings for rigidity, and proper decoupling were uncommon in 12's of this era, designed to maitain even response. The thick paper / linen cone is all original and perfectly centered on both (see detailed reports in exhibit F) and has a nice smooth quality, and very low resonance on these .. other perfectly matched around 61-62hz! -- keeping it clean for 2 way HiFi or perfect for Bass players.
As the nice tall peaks at cone resonance indicate (see reports below), both speakers have very nice control thanks to the still strong magnets at their native resonance of around 62hz.
As the included test reports show (see Exhibit A,B,F) they're near perfectly matched, made sequentially back in 1960. Both drivers test perfect at around 6.5 and 6.7 ohms DCR (see Exhibit A,F). They sounded wonderful with music, no rubs, buzzes -- no problems at all. Cones are nice and totally original.
Vintage Jensens like this are the real McCoy. Don't entrust the nice tunes from your tube amp to anything else. Mondern speakers generally don't have the crisp tone, or spunk that early Jensen's do. If you need high quality, well tested full range Jensen 12" drivers, you won't see a better matched set anywhere. They're getting a bit scarce, so avoid a bidders war now. Nice original drivers with truly mint cones sell quickly!
This nice pair will sell QUICKLY. Buy now to avoid bidder's war.
QUALITY is EXCELLENT. Cones are supple, original. The real McCoy! Paper edges are clean and fresh ... strong & crisp feeling. These drivers, originaly found in HiFi open baffle, and musical instruments experienced light duty, and kept as a pair in an estate.
See reports (Exhibit A,C,D,E). For tube amps, these are REAL WOOFERs -- they make nice, rich and clear LOW tones with hardly any effort. In this early variety from the 1960s -- an excellent choice if you are using vintage tube amps in open back or OPEN BAFFLE configuration. From the early days of HiFi & tone cabinet use -- before mfr's dispensed with SUPERIOR DETAIL & voicing in favor of sealed boxes, adding muddy LF extension and higher power handling.
For HiFi / audiophile uses:
If you are using vintage horns & drivers of any brand, with moderate power -- the high efficiency WOOFER P12 RJ (special HiFi woofer version), 8ohm rated, is a wonderful choice for LF in a 2 or 3 way system. The high gauss Alnico magnet actuates rigid springy suspension ... amazing and exquisite detail in almost any cabinet. On open baffles w/wings, or almost any kind of projector baffle, many bass reflex too - - all good ways to use one of the nicest 12" units made in postwar America late 1950 onward For mids, and a bit of upper bass in your system, it's hard to do better.
