A nice trio set of recommended types, early 17mm tall plates.

1) Telefunken 12ax7 / ECC83, 17mm SMOOTH, TALL plate. Silky, milky sound, with LOTS of detail. The hifi standard in McIntosh, Marantz and Fisher for 50 years running. You'll get lushious sound for many hours from this tube. 

2) General Electric 17mm tall plate 12Ax7, with etched letters and Dot code. These are some of my favorites. When they have been running awhile, you get such in-your-face mids, well refined and smooth --  and fairly rich lows, all with accurate detail and presence that really makes USA tubes great.  GE tubes were used in some of the worlds finest Westerex sound-on-film recording equipment and lots of other famously good broadcast audio. This is a very early tube, from about 1960. General Electric purchased the famous Ken-Rad plant, which had been instrumental in developing some of the worlds first miniature 12ax7 tubes, during the 1940s. This factory made very nice sounding valves.  

3) RCA 12Ax7 TALL 17mm, this one from 1959, just after they finished up the earlier black plate run. 

This is trio package will fix up the sound of any device you have running 12Ax7 tubes, giving you the ability to choose which of the three wonderful tubes you like best!

To experienced listeners, this era of General Electric's tubes are really among the finest sounding the USA ever produced. General Electric made these tubes at the (formerly Kentucky Radio) plant in Owensboro Kentucky. This factory produced some of the earliest 12AX7 type mini tubes beginning in the late 1940s.... and these early production GE 12Ax7's are identical to Ken-Rad's labeled tubes of the early 1950's! Characterised by a very thin & large top halo getter, thick and dark flashing, tall 17mm 4 hole ribbed grey plates -- and the absolute signature of all General Electic production... etched-on-glass letters in glass with the dot code.

 Ken-Rad/General Electric's are not black plate of this era as are the early RCA's. I've always felt they retain the detailed sound of old RCA black plate, but with a much smoother presention. At any rate.... some of the better sounding 12AX7's ever, maybe only beat by Mullard's best 1950s chevron BVA 17mm -- and really ... I'm a little happier to use these in any preamp we own!! They without doubt have the quintessential sound of 1950's america -- very BRIGHT & CLEAR accurate tone and not shouty, and NOT lush or dark -- after hours of warm up, the detail really shines and you'll wonder how you've ever lived without quality GE! 

2) These West German tubes have long set the standard for 12Ax7 dual triodes ... a very clear, detailed and absolutely one of the smoothest 12ax7's you can own. Genuine Tele's go forever as well, outlasting most other brands of the era. 

 3)   Again, this is the super cool early version of the RCA 12AX7 Tall, GREY plate ..... just made a few years and getting pretty famous now with audiophiles and musicians ... if you're collecting or planning to use in your older instrument or hifi's preamp -- and it calls for the low noise  ECC83 / 12Ax7A / 7025 ---  you are fine to try these  .. you may be VERY pleased with results too......e - hefty tall GREY plates.... 1x top D getter, and thick flashing .
